Autumn is easily my favourite month of the year - the colours, scarfs, chunky knit sweaters and tights, hot drinks, blankets and curling up with a good book? It's the serotonin I need on a daily basis.
So... I thought I'd pull together a list of five book recommendations to get you in the autumn spirit! From fantasy to dystopian to contemporary, we have it all!
The Cat Who Saved Books by Sosuke Natsakawa
This book feels autumnal to me because it makes me want to curl up with a cup of tea and a blanket and a book. In front of a fire. With candles lit. In a forest cabin.
This book is a whimsical tale of a boy who just lost his Grandfather and is struggling to move past his grief and reclusive ways. He goes on adventures to save books and it's the sweetest little story with a surprising poignant punch.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
The movie comes out in November so this month is the perfect time to be reading the book if you haven't already! This story follows the past of President Snow and really showcases how much of a master Suzanne Collins is at her craft. I absolutely loved seeing the origins of the Hunger Games and can't wait to see it adapted to the big screen.
Babel by R.F. Kuang
Babel feels autumnal to me purely because it gives me very dark academia vibes. It's not a small book by any means and it is so smart you will often find yourself feeling stupid, but that's the beauty of R.F. Kuang's work. She puts so much passion and research and care into her books that they're overwhelming in the best way possible.
Legendborn by Tracey Deonn I honestly have no rationale for why this is autumnal to me... it just is.
This is a superb fantasy series inspired by Arthurian legend. It's full of magic and adventure and the world-building (while a lot to understand at first) is really fascinating and rooted in so much culture and history.
The only thing to note is that this is currently an unfinished series so beware of cliffhangers before getting invested in this series!
The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis
The final book on my list is The Female of the Species. It's been a couple of years since I read it but I remember absolutely adoring it and I believe it's set in autumn. It's really dark and I would say to check the trigger warnings before jumping in but it's a super impactful and gut-wrenching read.
Those were my autumn book recommendations! What are your favourite books to read this season?
