My Favourite Book Tropes

I just posted a blog with my least favourite book tropes so I thought it was only fair to share some of my favourites as well.

Number 1: Enemies-to-lovers

This was bound to come, okay, so I’ve put it at number 1 to get it over. I’m basic.

Enemies-to-lovers is superior and always will be superior. The banter, the sexual tension, the slow burn. I. Am. Here. For. It.

When enemies-to-lovers appears, there are always other amazing tropes that follow along with it; forced proximity and one bed at the inn being my most beloved.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas and The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren are a couple of my favourite enemies-to-lovers books because, again, I’m basic.

Number 2: Found family

There is something so satisfying about watching a ragtag group of people find each other and become a family. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Six of Crows is maybe the epitome of this trope and executes it so perfectly. The book brings such a diverse and fascinating group of individuals together and we get to see them banter and bicker and fight for each other in the most heart-warming and gut-wrenching way possible.

Number 3: Gal pals

I don’t really know if women-supporting-women is a trope perse but I’m too much of a feminist to not include it. I almost hate to say that this trope is refreshing because… it should be a given.

But, nevertheless, my heart sings when I read about badass women that fight for each other and defend each other. It’s such a good example to young women, especially in YA, and I wish there was much more of it out there.

If it doesn’t pass the Bechdel test, I don’t want it.

Number 4: Grumpy and Sunshine

I think this trope speaks to me in particular because I am both Grumpy and Sunshine. In public and with people I’m not 100% comfortable with, I am Grumpy, Grumpy is me. But around my loved ones, I am Sunshine.

So seeing how these clashing personalities come together is so much fun for me and leaves me giddy. I especially love when it’s Boy-Sunshine and Girl-Grumpy. That combination speaks to my soul- I love a golden retriever book boyfriend!

Number 5: Counting victims during a battle scene

This one is hyper-specific and random so you’re going to have to bear with me, okay?

I absolutely love it when, during a fight scene where the characters are fighting off demons or something, they start counting how many they’ve killed and make it a competition. Bonus points if the love interests and trying to beat each other.

It’s random, I know, but it gives me life.

Jennifer L. Armentrout does this trope really well. In the Covenant series, Aiden and Alex are constantly trying to out-do each other and kill more daimons and it’s so entertaining to watch. I end up giggling at make-believe monsters being killed and, yes, I also spend my nights questioning my sanity.

Those were some of my favourite book tropes! There are so many more that I haven’t listed because, seriously, I could go on about this topic forever!

What are some of your favourite book tropes?
